Step-by-Step Tutorial and Free Pattern: Workout Shorts Two Lengths

Hi everyone!

I was so surprised (and thankful) with how many downloaded by first pattern that I decided to try posting new tutorial every TUESDAY!! This week I will be showing you guys how to make some super cute (and useful) workout shorts in two different lengths. This free pattern is available only in my size (MEDIUM) since it was created for my own personal use. If you guys are interested in other sizes let me how and I will make them available in my pattern store!! 

The finished garment measurements are: 

  • Waist: 29 inches/ 73,66 cm
  • Hip: 40 inches/ 101,6 cm
  • Length: Long version (15 inches/ 38,1 cm), Shorter version (13 inches/ 33cm)

This pattern is one of my favorite self drafted patterns and I have made 4 versions of it already. Two of them I made as a gift to my lovely (and badass) mother-in-law who loves to work out! For this tutorial I will be making the longer version of the shorts. 

So here is what you need:

- 2/3 yard (about 24 in/ 61 cm) of either two-way stretch or four-way stretch knit. I used this cool galaxy fabric from Joann, but I think that thicker knits works best since they have more "body" to it. 

- Elastic (waist measurement minus 1 in). I used a 1cm wide elastic because that is what I had in my house, but any size up to 1 inch wide should work. 

- My PDF pattern.

Here are some things to remember before we start the step-by-step tutorial:

- The seam allowance for this pattern is 1/2 in (1,27 cm). I used a serger but if you don't have one you can use a zigzag stitch. 

- If you are using a two-way stretch knit make sure that the grainline is parallel to the way with the greatest stretch.


Fold the fabric with selvages meeting. Cut two FRONT (1), two BACK (2) and two WAISTBAND (4). 

STEP 2- Cut BOTTOM (3)

STEP 3- SEW FRONT (1) and BACK (2).

Pin FRONT pieces with RIGHT sides together and sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. 

Pin BACK pieces with RIGHT sides together and sew using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. 

STEP 4- Sew BOTTOM (3) to FRONT (1).

Fold BOTTOM (3) in half and mark midpoint. Pin midpoint of BOTTOM to FRONT seam with RIGHT sides together as shown. Sew with 1/2 inch seam allowance. 

STEP 5- Sew BOTTOM to BACK (2).

Pin BOTTOM + FRONT that we have just sewn to BACK. Pin midpoint to BACK seam with RIGHT sides together as shown. Sew with 1/2 inch seam allowance. 

STEP 6- Sew legs. 

Pin FRONT to BACK with right sides together as shown. Sew with 1/2 inch seam allowance. 


Sew the ends of the two WAISTBAND (4) pieces together with the RIGHT sides together. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise with the WRONG sides together. Pin Waistband to shorts with RIGHT sides together. Sew waistband to shorts leaving a small opening in the back to insert elastic. 

STEP 8- Inserting ELASTIC into waistband.

Cut the elastic (waist measurement minus 1 INCH). Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic. Slide the safety pin into opening in the waistband. Using the safety pin work your way through the waistband. Pin the opposite end of the elastic into the shorts so it won't go into the waistband. Now pin the two ends of the elastic together and sew using a zigzag stitch. Close the opening in the waistband using an 1/2 inch seam allowance. 

STEP 9- HEM the shorts.

Fold the hem 1/2 inch and pin, then fold it again as shown. Sew the hem using a zigzag stitch. 

And that's it!! Now you have brand new workout shorts made by YOU!
